The Never Ending Blog - Gary Gigax Tribute: Sword of the Three Souls - Page 5

For the guys of Saphrym, Woobie, AhKong and Kenny, I haven’t done anything D&D before so I hope I did justice. For myself, I’m going to integrate this with a CGSociety image as part of my Weekend Images so this was a great idea.

Thanks for the tag!

Small winter drafts swirled around his boots, playing the leather straps. The uncomfortable cold was no serious discomfort to Serol. He had been in worse chills but it was not part of his legendary invincibility to make one’s self catch a cold, unless it was for a really good, albeit mystical, reasons.

The white forest seemed endless. Frost on branches and snow underfoot. It was a return to monotony after his brush with the Cyclops patrol. There had not been any more attacks since he sliced those five like warm butter.

“Vanguard group, that’s what they are,” commented his metallic companion.
“Were,” Serol corrected him. His throat felt dry and sore.
“Were,” said the sword.

Serol continued onwards, thinking his previous survivalist thoughts when it occurred to him on something he had not yet noticed about the sword. Something, though in the world of incantations and miasma of spell casting, would have been perfectly ordinarily magical, but still uncomforting to Serol. Descriptively, he continued his pace through the uncharted woods.

Only descriptively.
“Tharg?” asked Serol, quietly.
“Yes, boss?” answered the sword.
Serol was silent for a moment, to collect his thoughts. And to avoid any peeking roots or boles on the ground, lest he might trip himself in the discovery of his suspicions.

Tharg. said Serol. In his thoughts.
-I heard you the first time, boss. What is it? The returned quip, coloured with sarcasm, also radiated through the warrior’s mind.

That stopped him cold. Literally speaking, as though he avoided uproots, he nearly slipped into an ankle deep drift of snow.
“Psionics?” asked Serol loudly.
He reached to his back and pulled out the sword from the scabbard. In the fading sunset between the bare icy branches of the forest, the blade’s edge winked with pinpricks of red light.

“Er, surprise?” Tharg commented with a hint of fretfulness.
“You communicate through mind-reading too?”
“Well, it’s not like we’re going to discuss the weather or tomorrow’s stew or anything.”
“You spoke to me just now. I heard it with my ears. Why didn’t you do that earlier?”
“Bah, please. If I could do psionics with every Jack-Knife and Slaying-Sally I’m passed on with through the woods, having the gift of speech would have been pretty redundant.”
Serol smirked.
“Thus, you talk only to draw attention?”

If the sword had a tongue, it would probably be sticking it out at him in a very juvenile manner. Serol continued his paces through the forest as he listened to Tharg’s chatter.
“Well, the Cyclops group that had captured me, they were not much of conversationalists; intelligent conversation at any least. I’ve spent most of these captive years singing children songs in grunting noises to placate them from possible sword-worthy destruction.”
“Like?”
“I have this immense fear of them sticking me into a heavy solid rock and then tossing me into the briny deep of a bottomless lake.”
Serol chuckled. “No, I guess I wouldn’t want be in that position either.”
“It wouldn’t be so bad if I knew the lake might have a Queen of Nymphs to keep me company, but that’s asking too much, isn’t it?”

The warrior’s lips curled subtlety at its ends. But then his expression turn annoyed when he realized that the sword had effectively turned him away from the original subject.
“Hey, why didn’t you do psionics before?”
The sword sighed. “It... it’s not a skill I can use unless I have a wielder.”
“Me?”
“That’s ‘I’.”
“What?”
“That’s ‘I’. Grammatically, you should address yourself as with ‘I’, not ‘Me’.”
The warrior blinked in confusion at the many changes of subjects. “I think I’m losing you, Tharg.”
“No you’re not, I’m strapped to your back. You do how to wield a sword, right? Let’s practice. Just use your good arm and raise it over your-“
It was going nowhere, other than grating like granite blocks on the warrior’s temper.
Tharg! thought Serol with all the loudness a mind can muster.
-Boss? the answer sounded weak.

Silence filled the forest. Only the crunching of packed snow and rotten twigs under every step of Serol’s boots.

You only do psionics with I? thought Serol.
-That’s right. You’ve wielded me. I couldn’t exchange minds with you back then. It was only after you used True Strike spell and drove me into that Cyclops’s skull.
So now I’m your wielder?
-Right, boss. I mean, I can hardly keep shouting vocally on weak points while you’re hacking the enemy, can’t I? It’ll be like, ‘hit, hit, hit, die, c’mon die already!’ and of such like that.

His better humour restored, Serol contemplated the steep hillock before him, thinking of ways to maneuver up between the hidden net of thick roots and ice-crusted branches. It was almost a vertical wall of roots and packed earth of ice and stones. But it was not too high, only some 15 feet by his eye’s estimate. He could climb it more easily if he possessed a pickaxe.

He reached behind him and grabbed the hilt of Tharg.
Aye, there’s the rub he thought.
But no sooner he finished that thought, his gloved finger curled around the hilt, that something flashed his vision. It was as sudden as a lightning flash and equally sharp bright.

The vision beheld to him was that of an armed being, human or something resembling human. It’s armor was a mix of something beauty and something hideous, with a skull of an animal adorning the shoulders. He wore a crown of jagged spines, securing sleek ghost-white hair that framed a face of pure malice.

And that being held a sword in his hand, glowing with the colour of brimstone, the intricate engravings on the blade stood out clearly.

It shook Serol so much, that sudden blinding vision, that it was some moments before he realized that Tharg was calling out to him aloud.
“Serol? Hey, Serol?”
Serol linked his lips. The frosty air had made them dry but his stomach felt like something wet and slimy was crawling inside.

Realizing that he still gripped the hilt of the sword over his shoulder, he slowly drew it out and looked at the weapon.
“Um, yea-“ he cleared his throat and tried for composure, “Yes, Tharg?”
“Are you feeling well? You looked like you got gas or something.”
“Yea. Or something?” Serol echoed.

His eyes brushed briefly on the sword; daring not to stare too long less it might invoke that something. Or new things. Tharg, the Sword of the Three Souls, looked very little like that sword held by that ... creature. Tharg did not posses the same hilt or the engravings even though it was of similar shape and length.

A vision of the past or a prophecy of the future?

“Look, Serol, if you’re feeling unwell, maybe we can take a break?” asked Tharg attentively.
Lowering the sword, Serol shook his head. He returned to his previous object of study; the steep hillock.
“No, let’s keep moving. There’s something I need you to check for me for a minute.”
He walked away from the hillock, Tharg in hand, to a near-by clearing a few steps away, with very few trees in the way of his sight to the sky.

Then he swung the sword and tossed it as high above his head as his good arm could heave without injuring himself. The sword flew straight up into the sky before gravity reversed its direction and toward descent. The sword sank into the snow close to Serol as it fell; the hard ground was too packed for the blade to sink upright.

The warrior bend over the sword and picked it up.
“What did you see over the hillock?” he asked.
“Ooo, a settlement, boss. Not more than two miles away. Looks like a port village judging by that big river. Are we going there?”
“It depends. Are there boats? Sailboats specifically.”
“Maybe one or two of them had sails but they don’t really look like ferries to me.”

Serol slid the sword back into its hilt.
“We’ll take our chances. That river village should help us get to one of the main ports that lead to Skyloon. And we need to stock up on supplies if more Cyclop patrols are coming after us.”
Serol jiggled the smaller treasures in his satchel; gold he had plundered while retrieving the Sword of the Three Souls.

He contemplated the hillock again and instead of adventuring towards it, he took a bordering route. The woods ahead looked less dense but much rockier. It’ll be a pain to walk though but Serol pressed on.
“By the way, boss,” said Tharg.
“Hm-mm?”
“That was really scary of you to do that just now. I don’t think I’m cut out for real unexpected high-flying.”
“Sorry about that,” shrugged Serol absently.
“I mean, I’ll do it no problem, being almost indestructible and all, but a forehand warning is much appreciated.” The sword sounded sulky.

But Serol just quietly muttered,
“The feeling is mutual.”

The Twelve Commandments of Having Nuffnang Ads

I actually posted my old homework assignments in this blog, can you believe it? Reasons to it pertain as insurance; a lot of kids tend to look up online for homework answers. It’s all for blog traffic, of course.

After all, I got me a shiny new advertorial campaign! Whoo-hoo!

My Friday’s special... I can post this here, right? (eeep!)

I didn’t expect a second one so soon after my very first one; I had thought the one before was a fluke. Me blog ain’t really so hot as if you check out them big names like Estherchin or 3POINT8.

But hey, when ad marketing calls, I iz answering to ze call of ze ka-ching!

Never said I wasn’t mercenary. Still, there are some lines I won’t cross (maybe a toe or two on it). Just for a bedtime mantra, I’m wrote a discipline list about the rights to being a Nuffnang-Ad-added-blogger.

The Twelve Commandments of Having Nuffnang Ads.

1. Thou shall not put ads EVERYWHERE on thy blog. That’s just plain ridiculous.

2. Thou shall not haunt cyber cafes just to click thy own ads. It actually costs more to do that.

3. Thou shall not mess with thy busy officemates by calling over thy cubicle, “Aiyo c’mon, click-ler!”

4. Thou shall also not bother thy friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, instructors, shop owners and random strangers-on-thy-street about thy blog unless thou are actually blogging!

5. Thou will stop messing with thy public PCs’ Internet browsers by changing home address properties.

6. Thou shall click thy own ads thyself and not make bad funny of the advertising of thy ads; even if thy opinion is too true.

7. Thou may be overly sexy with super high visitor count and living in exotic South America, but thou shall still only be paid in Malaysian currency.

8. Thou shall not evaluate thy Nuffnang stats in pitying results as compared with dozens and dozens of other overly used blog stat counters.

9. Thou shall not commit exaggerated brown-nosing to thy Nuffnang Team for the ‘Featured Blog’ monthly.

10. Thou shall not prevaricate thy Nuffnang ads when thy ads ended up becoming more interesting than thee *cough*Dreamgirls*cough*.

11. Thou shall nag Nuffnag- *cough*, Nuffnang for income only if thy sure the check is not in thy mail yet.

12. Thou shall have all brag rights about thy income only if thou will belanja dinner to everbody who comments thee.

I'm sorry I wasn't around for the Great Nuffnang Birthday/Pajamas Party. From the snippets I got from blog hoppin', the results was estatic. I'll be checking on various random/expected bloggers for them pictures. PICTURES PEOPLE, YAY!!

PS: If there’s any more you can add to the list, I’m all ears. Not that I shamelessly asking for visitor returns, oh no-no-no-no-no-no-nuuuuuuuuuuuooo...

...maybe. *hehehe!*

Harlowelkumkanwee L. pyoo?

At my school, the Sun newspaper company stacks its sheets on the entrance to the workstation, prompting every Tom, Dick and Harry (as well as every Joan, Nor and Chanti) to take apiece and leave it somewhere where the Kakak-Janitors clean up their messes.

Oh, and it’s for reading too.

I enjoyed this article very much so other than the reason of lifestyle entertaining more intelligent than I could offer (for the week, at least), I’m keeping it here to remind myself that it’s not always a bad thing to make fun of tourists. Kudos to Nury Vittachi for writing it and the Sun newspaper for the print.

Fast food & faster words.
By Nury Vittachi (Nury@www.vittachi.com)

Monolingual English American often hears Asian-English words differently...

My friend’s daughter works in a fast-food shop in an airport. I watched her and her friends in action the other day.

The weird thing is that the staff can communicate perfectly well in English with anyone from Hong Kong, South Asia, East Asia or pretty much any other part of the region.

But when a fresh-off-the-boat tourist enters the restaurant, communication gets difficult. Monolingual English speakers from America, for example, ‘heras’ Asian-English words differently.

Customer: No, I don’t want - actually, maybe I do want Baygon. At least it would kill my appetite.

How come Asians can communicate with other Asians using this bare-bones English, while tourists struggle with it?

Because English is really a whole group of languages.

A tourist who speaks only the ‘Queen’s English’ limits himself to communicate with speakers of that dialect. But if you speak Asian English - which I propose we call Englasian - you end up with a language the majority of people on Earth can understand.

In fact, I reckon we should train the Queen of England to speak it. I can just picture her on her next royal tour of Asia stepping off the royal yacht and saying, “We are most amused to be here. My husband and I would like to say harlowelkumkanwee L. pyoo.”

Duly recommend you to visit his website at http://www.vittachi.com for more wise-cracking columns like these. It’s amazing to see our Asian (and ourselves as Asians) through a foreigner’s perspectives.

Being Malay - Might May 13th History Repeat?

Surprise, surprise.

Actually, it shouldn’t have been a surprise. The time of Barisan Nasional’s absolute power has now been threatened with a bombshell result in which, in the words of PAS leader, Nik Aziz, ‘It’s a tsunami.’

Imagine that. Opposition won five states! Five! That’s more-or-less one third of the all states in this little cultural soup of a nation. It’s the biggest general election shocker since 1969 and the first real shaker for BN since the independence.

Granted, word on the news channel says that 4.9 million Malaysians didn’t join the voting society. Me thinks these consist of the youngest crew, the first-time voters of ages 22-30 fellows. Politics in the younger generation is just not so as serious to them as the forefathers did.

Ironic, considering it’s the younger crew that shaped the future.

With this attitude, 10 or 20 years down the line and I wonder how much will things change. Or stay the same. Without the 2/3 majority in the winnings, the ruling party now can’t make around new laws without inspection by the Opposition.

At last, a real parliamentary debate! Let’s just hope nobody throws any literal punches while they’re at it *cough*Taiwan*cough*. Not especially since most of the seat holders nowadays are newbies with good arms and small experience.

Well, yeah, call me a hypocrite if you wish. I myself am not so politically or nationally fancy (then again, I haven’t even got a job yet, let alone am qualified to pay taxes). So my opinion may not cover anything. But the truth is that I’m a bit... worried is too strong a word. Apprehensive? Anxious?

The last time an Opposition wins on this major scale was in 1969. DAP, aka, the Rocket Party, won a majority in Penang, just as they do now, this 2008 year. But... I don’t know what to think really, when I heard the news.

I just have to be thankful that each of all our races is now more open-minded than they were some 30 years ago.

Like I said, I’m not a political party member. I don’t have a real bias towards any party, no real vision to how the winning party might influence the way the country works in the next few years or so. Except that we should keep the peace.

I like the peace. I enjoy eating and not living on the streets.

30 years ago is nothing like Malaysia today.

There weren’t a lot of sharing of cultures like today, where Chinese, Indians and Malays can sit and eat the same restaurant in the heart of KL. Back then, there was a lot of racism. Polarisation in residential areas. The Chinese holds 90% of the nation’s economic business (freaking 90%!) because they’re good at it. Prior to the elections of 1969, those in Penang won’t sell anything to the Malays or the Indians.

Because that’s just the way things are 30 years ago.

There aren’t any Malay rights, no hak bumiputera back then. Malays, after centuries under the oppressive Western rule, suddenly found themselves with a freedom to build a nation. They’ve been farmers and miners for generations. There’s always some foreign ‘Resident’ to report to. Heck, now... they don’t know where to start. Blur and confused, and most sad of all, totally uneducated.

And that how the other races took advantage.

I hope I don’t offend anybody at this point. This was 30 years ago and we Malays are just damn stupid and confused people. Indians, those shipped in by the British to work, have families and connections back in their homeland. So does the Chinese, even more so because of their strong trading background.

But Malays are being left out. They don’t know how to develop big business, except being an underling.
Factory worker.
Chauffer.
Office assistant.
Working class and big business all belonged to the Chinese and the Indians because they got the guts and the willpower to survive leaving their homeland and crave a niche in a young foreign nation. A nation they can help build. Opportunities beckons.

So when the DAP won Penang in 1969, there was a parade on the Penang streets. It was a very nice celebrative parade too. But racial tolerance was... pretty slim. Freedom of speech was more open then but less controlled. DAP was fully owned by the Chinese people. Penang was full of Chinese due to the multi-cultural society we got cooked in this trading archipelago.

As they celebrated over the BN, the Malay-majority party, it was not a really nice kind of celebration... for a Malay. The party took to the streets and called out racial slurs against the Malays.

They laughed at how much better they were and that all Malays ought to serve them. They even carried brooms, swinging and waving them, saying that they’re going to sweep the Malays back into the jungle where they belong.

Throw this group of happy-go-lucky people into present day Malaysia... I don’t know actually. Would today’s Chinese be tolerant of them? Were we Malays back then was that bad? Would the Indian community be involved?

I’m guessing yeah. Heck, proof was in the economy and the standard of living. The other races were way ahead of the Malays way, waaaaay back then. Malays, you see, are at the risk of losing what being Malay was.

In terms of education, economy, land rights and scholarships, the other races of very young Malaysia are making Malays the same way what the Americans had turned the Red Indians into today; a lost sub-culture.

The same isolation in development had also suppressed and nearly destroyed the Australian aborigines by the Australian’s European descendants. New Zealand nearly killed the Maoris with polarisation just as the Spanish had destroyed the native South Americans (albeit, more literally).

Yet Malays were in Malaysia first.

By now I think I might have offended a few readers. I apologise if my writing had caused any harm to feelings to my fellow Indians and Chinese blog readers but I won’t retract my words in my blog. Because I don’t want to ignore or forget the significance what had happened in May 13, 1969.

Most of the youngsters of today in my age, toward the same said youngsters who didn’t came out to vote on 8th March 2008, might not be fully aware of what May 13, 1969 was. History books just said ‘racial riots’.

Now with CNN, Aljazeera and BBC exposure, we can pretty much guess that May 13 incident was as black as a day in any 3rd world country riots. Car bombs, makeshift weapons, Malays versus Chinese in a 24 hour murderous frenzy of Kampung Baru.

Hundreds of the Chinese were going to take a step too far into the heart of KL, into Kampung Baru, on May 13, 1969. Heck, they're still waving their brooms.

My dad was nearly in the middle of it. He was a Mara college student then. There were no cellphones nor SMS texting. The wider public didn’t know the Malays youths were planning a fight because of... yes, the polarisation attitude.

Nobody spoke to the Chinese or the Indians community, thus very few were warned of the riot. Those who were warned didn’t think Malays had the guts to do it.

Ayah and a few buddies was told by total gossip to hired the college bus, a mini bus nonetheless, and take part in a gathering or sorts. Maybe a speech. Maybe somebody important might turn up. He was a just a student and the most trouble he’s ever been in was smoking in the college library.

They were there at the spot, late afternoon. Just a whole lot of Malay people hanging around like a large scale lepak-ing guys. He knew something was super-wrong when, after getting out of the bus for a while, some of the present Malays, big rowdy roughnecks, started to single out some of the Chinese folks that were just passing on the outside, trying to get away.

Ayah knew it was becoming a really messy fight when some of the present Malays started to swing makeshift weapons. Parangs, knives and a whole lot of wooden sticks. Some of the rioters were damned well prepared.

He and his friends high-tailed out of the group and ran for the bus. He described to me of his shock when a car near him caught on fire and burst into flames. He also saw a Malay policeman beating up a Chine motorcyclist trying to escape the riots. A policeman, mind you.

The bus driver of the college also brought a weapon it seemed, but maybe it was compassion for the college kids, namely my dad and his friends, that he changed his mind and got them back on the bus. I like to think that way. Ayah was defenceless. The college students thought it was just a speech gathering.

For the rest of the bus trip, the driver had used this big wooden stick to jam the doors shut and drove the mini bus of the area. Ayah said that all he remembered were stones at the bus windows because he kept his head down. The riots had started at 5pm and the bus safely got back to Mara college at 7pm. At this point, all Ayah could say was the fear he felt during the 2-week curfew imposed by the government.

I never heard the May 13 incident being told that way. The last time it happened, Tun Abdul Razak formed some sort of a National Counsel appointed by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and for 2 years, there was a semi-emergency state in Malaysia.

All gatherings restricted, freedom of speech suppressed and anybody suspected of racial violence, even the hint of racial violence... well, I can only imagine. Maybe there’s something in Wikipedia I can read about. It’s a shame, me being a Malay in Malaysia and not knowing the event that nearly tore up the honour and dignity of being a Malay.

Stupid Malays.

Those who are aware and felt concerned to be in the know, I like to think that we have more harmony today in 2008 than back then in 1969. A lot of Malay rights were made clear and acted upon. Rights given to your heritage as a Malay had already been voiced in the Constitution. Land rights, job rights, education rights.

Of course, these acts severely limited the rights and opportunity of the Chinese and the Indian community. They are Malaysians too. In fact, they practically built most of the country in its first few years and before that, more so while under the British rule. I’m not surprised that the Hindraf gave out voice about ethnic cleansing... and it could be very true, at the rate of how so much Malay rights are imposed.

Really, why should Malays have more rights in economy, politics and education anyway? What’s so great about Malay sultans and why should we even have them? Why should every Malay have to be a Muslim?

And makes a Malay anyway? After all, aren’t all dark-skinned Equatorial mongoloids come from the Indonesians Isles? There shouldn’t even be a Malay race anyway. Let’s just throw away the silat culture, the heritage of the monarchy and the Kongsi-Raya/Deepa-Raya nonsense.

Really, if we had just let the Chinese rule the nation, like how Singapore is today, we’ll rule Asian’s trading economy. If we gave more rights and opportunities given to the Indians, their high-tech skills and company productions maybe even trumps over Japan.

But most of the rights had been given to the Malays. Sons of farmers, former colonists, fishermen’s blood and even (very sadly) carrying legacy of rioters. We open universities, give hundreds and hundreds of scholarships, no matter how undeserving they are.

30 years after the 1969 incident and the Malays still doesn’t even own 30% of the Malaysian economy. Even with all the hak bumiputera, we’re still so damn slow; we’re dragging our own feet and at times, even trip over them. I think half of us still feel like former colonists, just waiting for the next 1st world nation to eat our resources and spit sh**.

Granted, we did cough up a few international medals with the current BN ruling *cough*Twin Towers*cough. But... I hope times had changed. With the win of the Opposition and with the better and more open-minded between races, I hope we can prevent single-mindedness, close-mindedness and xenophobia.

Did BN actually think they can rule the land for another 50 years? Puh-leez!

In fact, the very proof of the Opposition winning shows that after 50 years of independence, we are growing more mature. Mature as voters, mature as fellow Malaysians, mature in terms of community between races. Mature as in we stand up for rights, for benefits, for stop-brainwashing-our-puny-little-minds-with-your-media-control-and-wasteful-banners-because-they-didn’t-work.

We need other races to teach Malays how to be more vigorous in having rights and making real use of those rights to support the other races. We need to knock the Malays on the head and tell them to stop being so lazy, backward-minded and stand up for themselves.

So the truth of the results of the General Elections 2008, I’m pretty okay with it. I’m not enthusiastic, but I’m more hopeful about the future than I was in 2004. There’s a lot of new people in the seats, new faces, new ideals and more importantly, exposure to other races based on harmony. Maybe there’ll be a real security of the Malay future and all rights will equalize for all races. For all those who need them.

30 years is 360 months ago, more-or-less 10,950 days in the past. Have we been more tolerant of each other since then? Less hostile and more community sharing? If something happened to one of the 3 races, will the other races help?

Someday we can really say the 3 major races can parade together, not in a bloody riot, but as Malaysian. True Malaysians.

Heck, we might even be friends.

I guess I’ll stick around to find out.

Peace Malaysia,
Quickening.

Happy Moments Rhymes With Me

Happy - Happy Moments

Do enjoy my words. Please vote for me

*****

What is happiness to me,
In a form to see,
So I may share my moments better.
First I ask,
Prior to this task,
How do I express this in a letter?

How do I say,
The joys of my day,
Surrounded by those I give love.
Family and friends,
Laughing and shaking hands,
In a house filled to the rafters above.

When holidays come,
The mat says welcome,
All rooms are prettied with trimmings.
The men renew ties,
While cooks make pies,
All is kin in family gatherings.

Those are the moments,
Those precious moments,
Forever in my heart and soul.
Written in my blog,
For my memory to jog,
And recollections shine like gold.

A private happiness,
You can probably guess,
Sitting here and making words like these.
Alone with my PC,
That’s happiness to me,
Telling the world of my smiles, I please.

And another I ask,
As I do this task,
What can make me happier today?
Oh, if I could win,
A contest herein,
For the cash reward won’t go astray.

I know for certain,
Delight of my parents,
Is to travel to many exotic places.
I followed them once,
And remembered since,
Being a mule, carrying cups and laces.

It is their pleasure,
To buy souvenirs,
To showcase at home and give presents.
For their joy,
I too have joy,
Even if my back breaks under those presents.

Their passion, their love,
A match sent from above,
I envy them and wished for the same.
A private happiness,
A wish I confess,
To find a man who feels the same.

Oh, another happiness,
For this poetess,
In my day-dreams, I see my mate.
Where he might be,
Who he might be,
If there is one for me, he’s late!

So what is happy?
What makes a moment happy?
Is it spreading joy or to reminisce?
Is it make special,
For special people,
Or to believe in future happiness?

I think, most of all,
In spring, summer and fall,
What makes me happy is happiness itself.
Gatherings and writings,
Travelings and dreamings,
I’m happy to be creative and be myself.

What’s Your Favourite Death Wish?

I was listening to Pop Shuvit’s Mara Bahaya mp3 while tip-tapping away at the keyboards when it dawned to me how the music really makes me want to get up and going, do something that gets the adrenaline pumping.

Hardly a blog entry would achieve that.

It was either I stop listening to our local music bands (hehehe, not really...) else I get out of my chair and play chicken on the LDP freeway. Luckily there is a third option because the former would upset the local music industry and the latter would upset the MBPJ (chicken lady on LDP, news at eight).

My substitute was to look for a few good death wishes online (heaven praise to Google).

A death wish usually mean a person who is contemplating a last-act, final-resort action before succumbing to death. This term usually applied to depressed, nothing-left-to-lose folks.

However, in the confidence of a better outcome, to describe a death wish associated with an adrenaline junkie is just to say, “He’s plain crazy”. Hooked on the natural body’s response to a fight-or-flight situation; these things really get the juices pumping and is a healthy thing to do.

Of course, if in doing the said death wish don’t get you killed.

Mmm-mmmm, fast cars. A key to a girl’s heart is a key to a silver Mercedes Benz SLK (well, at least it works with this girl). Brutally honest fact, I love to drive. I take every opportunity to get into any of my parents’, siblings’, relatives’ friends’ car and be in charge of the steering wheel. Ask me to buy sugar in 7-Eleven at 3 in the morning? No problem! Let me get the car keys...

I suppose it’s one thing I inherited from my grandfather. He owned cars during the British era, when cars are so scarce, the roads are practically empty. His last car was a Kancil, since it’s so light and speedy.

Speedy is what I do best in a car. My death wish is to drive a real Mercedes Benz SLK and take it on the longest, straightest, emptiest highway in Germany (they got no speed limit!).

Aaaah yes. The gloves, the ropes, the carribena, the tight-strapped hip harness men won’t wear without a really good reason... I took a youth camp course when I was 14 and my favourite activity was definitely the rock climbing. Though it was a damn huge rock I was tasked to conquer, in retrospect, it was probably pretty tame.

In reality, I’m so scared of heights, I get nauseous just trying to walk on a pedestrian bridge. I’ve once got so nervous on a flying-fox at one course in (Outward Bound, Lumut), that I practically cried like a baby (the instructors let me down by ladder *shame-shame*).

Even so, given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (or rather the last-thing-I-might-do-in-a lifetime opportunity) and with a rock this big and precarious looking, I shake out my tracksuits.

Haha, the piece-de-resistance. Yes, I might be tempted to jump through the open door of an airplane with an oversized umbrella. Still, it’ll definitely be my ultimate death wish, suspended only by clouds. On a whimsical note, I often wonder if what skydivers felt is what birds feel on their first belly-flop before flight.

Believe it or not, there’s a sky-diving centre in Malaysia. Located in Segamat, Fras Skydiving Centre offers beginners’ static-line course (whatever that means). Read a first-hand report from someone who was probably forced to do it, here: http://allmalaysia.info/news/story.asp?file=/2005/2/12/interests/10119705&sec=mi_interests_outdoor

Racing cars, rock-climbing and sky-diving would be my favourite death wishes, the thing that I might do before I’ll die happy (Dear Big-Guy-Above, please don’t play ominous music, that was not a literal prayer).

So I’m going to throw this question out to all readers. What’s your favourite death wish? Do you think you can achieve it? How old would you think you’ll get around to it?

Gave The TwoSuperHeroes Their Own Award

Hahaha, really I liked the tagged blog awards. As it turns out from yesterday, the twosuperheroes had been passing a tag award of bloggy-ness to some folks who in their estimates.

Actually, which by standards of their estimates, I was at first, dunno either to be grateful or suspicious. Baaaaah, having a blog of only 3 months old and coming from an established twosome of infamous recognition, I suppose gratefulness should come first (I’ll be suspicious later).

Unfortunately, how am I to answer to such is totally no clue. With examples from the recent Oscar thank-you-thank-you-thank-all-of-you speeches. Just goes to show that I’m going through a bloggers’ block phase. You could probably tell as I’m blogging about this instead of usually diverse, purposeful and intelligent entries.

Okay, my posts are at least best two out of three.

These are the awards they so nicely had passed around to not only myself but to Yozoranitesky, L'abeille and X-T, Dreckker and their statistical rival Andrew Ooi.

I’ve been to all these fellas’ blogs and I’m glad to having another thing in common with them. Unfortunately, they are also some of the folks I would have had wanted to pass the awards too.

Aww, damn...

Well, time for another blog hunt. I’ve yet to fix up the other 8-Facts-About-Me Tag by ImamKhalid (shucks!). Hmm, looks like my bloggers’ block is slowly being... er, unblocked.

In the meantime, I’ve thought to placate them superheroes with a midget GIF picture and hopefully this will satisfy them until I find some real links.

A tinnie animated pic for their sidebar. Mine would had already been on display at the header ages ago (hahaha!).

William Blake's Auguries of Innocence

I bet that not a lot of Malaysian can say that they had ever been enamoured of historical poetry. Nowdays, words that rhyme are either from a primary school class learning nursery English or something out of the music billboard charts. Then again, in retrospect, lax in the rules of rhyming is forgivable in the former and yet doesn’t necessary apply to the latter.

Screw me, at times my English is too good, me thinks.

I often surf to other blogs - and I sincerely won’t name them - and at times felt a bit smirky or mixed emotions at the state of the written English amongst Malaysian bloggers. Words like mixed Manglish-ness and the -larr at end quote.

That’s not enough, at times bloggers even colourize their words with fancy italics, bold font and multi-rainbow text in sections to the over-pimped extend that brings attention to the subject matter, but sort of flops in the overall concept of being an intelligible and professional entry.

Blame it on the SMS generation, were we all speak in so many abbreviations *sigh*.

I’m no English genius. Hell, I don’t want to lecturer English (of course, I confess I sometimes intentionally slip into street language myself; sorrie-lee...). But it’s kind of getting hard, to find a nice, interestingly written piece that’s isn’t wordy-pimped, graphic-overused and is not some online thesis instructional guide.

Blog entries and the language used for blogging, I think, should be more like Wikipedia entries. Clear-cut, precise, understandable to read and with relevant content.

Granted, not a lot of us got A1 in their SPM scores and consistent A+ grades in their university English papers (being a female Malay, I’ve been bullied of being a cheater amongst the rich Chinese girls at Puberty Institution, aka Secondary School), but when it comes to having an international target in mind, maybe it helps with a little grammar discretion.

Bah, I don’t know how you put up this far. I’ve intended to post one of my favourite historical poems (yes, I love old-fashioned Romantic-era poetry. That’s not odd, is it?) and here I’ve strayed to lack of high-quality local English blogs (though, they do pay some damn good attention when they open emotionally-charged discussions).

This poem is the very first long poem I had found myself being drawn into without some sort of educational requirement. In simple terms, I didn’t find it because I had to write a report of something poetry.

Maybe it’s because I was 13 when I read it for the first time. Suddenly I realized, I shouldn’t have been so quick to wish wanting to quickly grow up and face adult life. To me, William Blake had reminded us not to take the importance of having a childhood phase for granted. Who he wrote Auguries of Innocence was as if through the dreams of a child...

William Blake - Auguries of Innocence

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

A robin redbreast in a cage
Puts all heaven in a rage.

A dove-house fill'd with doves and pigeons
Shudders hell thro' all its regions.
A dog starv'd at his master's gate
Predicts the ruin of the state.

A horse misused upon the road
Calls to heaven for human blood.
Each outcry of the hunted hare
A fibre from the brain does tear.

A skylark wounded in the wing,
A cherubim does cease to sing.
The game-cock clipt and arm'd for fight
Does the rising sun affright.

Every wolf's and lion's howl
Raises from hell a human soul.

The wild deer, wand'ring here and there,
Keeps the human soul from care.
The lamb misus'd breeds public strife,
And yet forgives the butcher's knife.

The bat that flits at close of eve
Has left the brain that won't believe.
The owl that calls upon the night
Speaks the unbeliever's fright.

He who shall hurt the little wren
Shall never be belov'd by men.
He who the ox to wrath has mov'd
Shall never be by woman lov'd.

The wanton boy that kills the fly
Shall feel the spider's enmity.
He who torments the chafer's sprite
Weaves a bower in endless night.

The caterpillar on the leaf
Repeats to thee thy mother's grief.
Kill not the moth nor butterfly,
For the last judgement draweth nigh.

He who shall train the horse to war
Shall never pass the polar bar.
The beggar's dog and widow's cat,
Feed them and thou wilt grow fat.

The gnat that sings his summer's song
Poison gets from slander's tongue.
The poison of the snake and newt
Is the sweat of envy's foot.

The poison of the honey bee
Is the artist's jealousy.

The prince's robes and beggar's rags
Are toadstools on the miser's bags.
A truth that's told with bad intent
Beats all the lies you can invent.

It is right it should be so;
Man was made for joy and woe;
And when this we rightly know,
Thro' the world we safely go.

Joy and woe are woven fine,
A clothing for the soul divine.
Under every grief and pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.

The babe is more than swaddling bands;
Every farmer understands.
Every tear from every eye
Becomes a babe in eternity;

This is caught by females bright,
And return'd to its own delight.
The bleat, the bark, bellow, and roar,
Are waves that beat on heaven's shore.

The babe that weeps the rod beneath
Writes revenge in realms of death.
The beggar's rags, fluttering in air,
Does to rags the heavens tear.

The soldier, arm'd with sword and gun,
Palsied strikes the summer's sun.
The poor man's farthing is worth more
Than all the gold on Afric's shore.

One mite wrung from the lab'rer's hands
Shall buy and sell the miser's lands;
Or, if protected from on high,
Does that whole nation sell and buy.

He who mocks the infant's faith
Shall be mock'd in age and death.
He who shall teach the child to doubt
The rotting grave shall ne'er get out.

He who respects the infant's faith
Triumphs over hell and death.
The child's toys and the old man's reasons
Are the fruits of the two seasons.

The questioner, who sits so sly,
Shall never know how to reply.
He who replies to words of doubt
Doth put the light of knowledge out.

The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caesar's laurel crown.
Nought can deform the human race
Like to the armour's iron brace.

When gold and gems adorn the plow,
To peaceful arts shall envy bow.
A riddle, or the cricket's cry,
Is to doubt a fit reply.

The emmet's inch and eagle's mile
Make lame philosophy to smile.
He who doubts from what he sees
Will ne'er believe, do what you please.

If the sun and moon should doubt,
They'd immediately go out.
To be in a passion you good may do,
But no good if a passion is in you.

The whore and gambler, by the state
Licensed, build that nation's fate.
The harlot's cry from street to street
Shall weave old England's winding-sheet.

The winner's shout, the loser's curse,
Dance before dead England's hearse.

Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born,
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.

Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.

We are led to believe a lie
When we see not thro' the eye,
Which was born in a night to perish in a night,
When the soul slept in beams of light.

God appears, and God is light,
To those poor souls who dwell in night;
But does a human form display
To those who dwell in realms of day.

Recipe: Breakfast Pepper Mix

Haha, this one is especially for Raising Mercury requesting healthy recipes. My family isn’t really a super-duper health concerned family other than always keeping our sugar intake to absolute minimum (family history has occasional diabetes), like tea with no sugar.

Although this recipe frys the food, I still say it’s healthy because there’s a lot of ingredients; the balance of veggies, meat and carbo. Mak only makes these in a huge batch in the morning so she could eat it again by noon (unless big brother Arsenal drops by, then the Pepper Mix is gone before mid-morning).

I don’t have the step-by-step photos, mainly because I wasn’t around when Mak cook this (too lazy to get out of bed) but as all you need is a wok and a large pepper grinder, it’ll be cool.

Pepper Mix.

Ingredients:
Some whole grain bread slices, 4 at least.
Potatoes, thickly sliced.
Carrots, sliced.
Broccoli, chopped.
Japanese cucumber, sliced (optional).
Onions, chopped.
Canned button mushrooms, sliced OR soaked shiitake mushrooms, sliced (optional).
Hot dogs
At least 2 burger patties (optional).
Lots and lots of grinded pepper.
NO SALT!

1. First up, boil the hot dogs until it’s soft and meaty, then slice them. Fry the burger patties on a pan (I used Ramly brand) until they’re half-cooked, then add in the sliced hot dogs. Fry them together until they’re done (frying the hot dogs gives it a grilled taste).

2. If you don’t want to use meat, use mushrooms! Slice some canned button mushroom or some shiitake mushroom (after it’s been soaked long enough to turn soft) and fry them in cooking oil.

*Note: Mak usually use meat or mushrooms as an excuse to reduce adding salt, or not add salt at all. You can still use both meat and mushrooms but it’ll be very, very filling (Ayah complains it’s Mak’s fault that he’s fat).*

3. Remove the meats/mushrooms from the pan and put them in a serving bowl. If you’re cooking burger patties, cut them into smaller pieces. Now fry the potatoes until it’s cooked. Poke it with a fork to see how soft you want it to be.

4. Remove the potatoes and also add them into the serving bowl. Now fry the carrots slices and chopped broccoli until, yes, soft and juicy. Occasionally, Mak often adds sliced Japanese cucumber into the frying veggies for more vitamins.

5. Once veggies done, that too goes into the serving bowl. Now you can fry the onions. To add a bit of spicy-ness, chop a bit of fresh chilli and fry them with the onions.

Note: If you’re wondering why all this stuff had to be fried seperately, it’s because the potatoes cook longer than the onions and the veggies don’t fry well if the heat is too high. Frying everything at once also takes longer to cook.*

6. For the last bit, toast the whole grain bread slices and then cut them into squares. Mix in all the cooked ingredients by tossing them like salad with a healthy dose of pepper. It helps if you had pounded the peppercorns in a pestle and mortar first.

7. Add an easy spray of oil and best served hot. It still taste good after it cooled, which you can eat it as a snack throughout the day.

This recipe was made soon after BabyNabil got over his teething and wanted to bite into everything. We can’t let him eat our too-long-french fries or thick daging masak merah so the Breakfast Pepper Mix was a hit because of the bite-sized pieces.

However, there is this mysterious phenomenon, but maybe it’s only in my house. Take note though. If you cook this with the meats and left the food on the open table, the meats tend to disappear to a smaller amount from time to time.

Either cooking this creates a black hole in the serving bowl, or somebody kept popping food into his mouth with his fingers when no one is looking. Maybe I better ask big brother Arsenal as this happens most often when he’s home.

The Single Girl and Her Valentine’s Day

Thanks to Kav and SewJin, their views on love and Valentine’s Day had infected me with the oozy wussy day-dreams of What-I’ll-Do-On-Valentine’s-Day-If-I-Had-A-Man.

I thought I had outgrew all this V-Day stuff since I supplied myself with romantic fiction as a boyfriend substitute but I guess sometimes, one does wonders how does the real thing thinks about February 14.

Bah, humbug.

St Valentine never said that his b-day was a celebration of nyah-nyah-you’re-all-alone. There’s a great virtue in being still single and you don’t have to look hard to find it.

So you’re single and at home. All your girlfriends are out with their guys and your guyfriends are out with their girls and don’t even think about calling on your overly-concerned-too-inquisitive-but-well-meaning family.

To the Mall!

Aha! What better way to forget you’re all alone than to interact with strangers. Get your butt off that chair and take some fresh air... in a shopping area! Take out a little bit of cash with your and take a hike down your favourite departmental stores.

While other couples are busy doing their hair, checking their wardrobe and having trouble reserving a place in their overly-priced Valentine’s dinner, just strut along clothing boutiques and maybe try out the latest fashion design.

You don’t have to wait for anyone and there’s no one around you to be shocked about your eating habits when you devoured that double cheeseburger and large soda. Yup, to the Mall on Valentine’s for your ‘Me-Time’.

Cook Something Special.

Remember when all your mom, aunties, cousins and distant relation by 3rd degrees kept taking you on the “Why are you still single?” inquisition. Well, as much as you want to forget those painful hours, they do have something of a point. As a girl’s role in a married life is to cook and clean, maybe it’s a good time to brush up your cooking skills.

Only this time, you cook what YOU want to eat! Eyeing that chocolate cheese cake? Hm-mmm, how about some chicken steak with honey-lemon sauce? Better yet, take some mince meat and some taco spice seasoning, some burger buns and build a mound of Sloppy Joes! Yum!

Take the Day Off.

Of course, after that hard day’s play of window shopping and new food skills, you do need to relax. Remember, while other girls are screaming into that dress two sizes too small, you’ve just have a nice long bath, wearing your baggy pants and sipping hot Milo drink.

Oh what’s a home girl to do? Make a playlist of soothing songs, snuggle in the couch with a tub of ice-cream and pour into that romance book you’ve always wanted to read (I plan to be immersed in a Julie Garwood). Turn off your phone and lock your door. This is your quiet afternoon and to hell with anybody stopping you.

Be a Fairy Godmother!

Of course, there are some of us who cannot help but be really, REALLY conscious about Valentine’s Day. Well, if you don’t have a date for the evening doesn’t mean the rest of your girlfriends should suffer a night they might want to forget.

Make this night as special for them as you have imagined yours would be. Help them in their small dress, check their hair, make sure their plan of romance is secured (“Should I hold his hand? Should I leave the bouquet of roses in the car while we have dinner?”).

And always remember the emergency Bad-Date cell-phone call. Plan together on making a phone call in the middle of that dinner. If she’s having a bad time, it’s the emergency to I-sorry-but-I-have-to-go action plan and rescue her from the restaurant. If she’s having a great time, you’ll be the very first person to know about it (ooo, start to gossip chain!)

Blog Your Ideal Boyfriend.

Of course, you can’t say that your lack of a better half is the fault of the opposite gender. Just as some folks have a Things-To-Do-Before-I-Die list, make up a Perfect-Guy-For-Me list. Most ladies couldn’t secure a man because they wavered in their decision. Afterall, unlike securing a job, securing a partner takes more consideration (and mostly likely, he’s as undecided as you are).

So make a list and be affirm on who your man should have. Good health. Taller than me. Strong familial bonds. Taller than me. Have religious faith. Taller than me. Secured occupation. Taller than me. Loves kids. And taller than me so I may have a pair of shoulders I can lean back against.

Well, can’t say Valentine isn’t a fun and special day for the single girl. There are many way a sister can celebrate love itself and be thankful that she doesn’t have to put up with the wrong sort of guy.

Me? What am I doing on Valentine’s Day? Well, actually, I have a date with 2 guys on February 14, both at the same time. Yeah, a Java programming course. There’s the lecturer and bus full of 20+ people too. It might even take a whole day.

Well, at least I’ve got 2 guys to get busy with.

Flash Game: Hapland Series Walkthrough

This is one of the coolest strategy flash games I’ve ever played. But the system to complete the game, the correct system, is horrendous. There are a lot of steps and timing involved one after the other in order for you to open the portal.

Not surprisingly, the feedback for Hapland was so successful, Foon.co.uk made two more Hapland flash games.

It’s quite funny the see the animation following each sequence of events. But it’s tricky; if you get it wrong, you might get stuck and have to restart.

Just for that, I’ve looked for the walkthrough for all 3 Hapland games and spoil your enjoyment right here.

Hapland 1 Walkthrough

PLAY HAPLAND GAME

1. The first thing you need to do is click on the manhole cover to open it, and then click on the yellow up arrow to get a man to come out.

2. Make sure the barrel of the cannon is parallel to the ground and click on the man to fire the cannon. A rock will hit the log, knocking it down to make a bridge across the gap.

3. Once the bridge is down, click on the window to open it so that the man inside can hear the bell when you shoot it next.

4. Click on the cannon to raise the barrel to shoot a rock at the bell.

5. You're going to need a bit of timing here because you need to click on the spear when the rock hits the bell. If you don't the spear will be trapped under the rock. The below picture shows what you should have if you timed it right.

6. Now click on the cannon again to lower the barrel. The next two projectiles are bombs and you need to get rid of them.

7. You'll need some timing here. When you click on the man to fire the cannon, you'll need to click on the bridge when the bomb gets close. The bridge will angle up and when the bomb hits it, it'll bounce straight up and explode harmlessly in the air. You'll have to do this again for the next projectile.

8. Your last projectile is a key for the man in the cave to open the cement pylon blocking his way. Keep the cannon barrel level to the ground and fire, but don't click on the bridge this time.

9. Click on the man next to the cannon again, which will raise the stairs and dump him into the barrel.

10. Click the yellow up arrow below the manhole to get another man to pop out. Click on the cannon to raise the barrel to aim at the bell again. Fire.

11. Click on the man below the bell to make him push the bell tower to the right.

12. Click on the spear to get one end under the rock, then click the bell three times to make it fall on the spear. This will launch the rock and explode the trigger bomb.

13. Next click on the red arrow sign so it points to the right.

14. Now, click on the door below the red arrow to make the man come out. He'll climb the hill and go inside, lighting the first torch.

15. You'll need a bit of timing here. When you click the man in the cave, he starts to walk to the right. The crate opens and some kind of dog with a sawblade drops down. Just before the dog hits the ground, you need to click on the window below the cannon. It'll open and slam shut which will jar the rock loose to land on the dog and kill it.

16. Congratulations! The second torch lights when the man goes inside and the portal opens.

1. The first thing you need to do is turn on the light and angle it so that it shines on the rocks.

2. Next you'll click on the bird who will then pick up a rock. You'll need a little bit of timing here, because when the bird flies over the cloud on the left, you'll need to click on the cloud to squirt the bird with acid, which will cause the bird to drop the rock on the electrified wiring which will then explode.

3. Wait for the bird to land again, then click on him to pick up another rock. This time, you'll click on the right cloud when he flies over to make him drop the rock into the catapult.

4. Now, click on the sign with the red circle to turn it around showing a green arrow. Then click on the manhole to open it up so he can fall through. Then click on the yellow up arrow to make him walk forward.

5. Once he's fallen through, click on the sign again to turn it around back to the red circle. You'll need a bit of timing for this next part. Click on the box to his right which will release a bomb. He'll pick it up and right about the time you see an exclamation point over his head click the yellow up arrow again which will shoot a puff of air to blow the bomb into the door on the far right side, blowing it up.

6. Next, click on the pink lid of the box to his right three times which will cause it to fall and make a ramp he can walk up.

7. Click on the man and he'll walk up the ramp and into the door you just blew up. The upstairs window light will come on.

8. Next you need to close the two top switches to provide power to the stairs. Then click on the right arrow of the flywheel to tell the stairs which direction to move.

9. Next, click on the stairs which will move to the right to allow the man to climb back up to the catapult.

10. Ring the doorbell to the house on the right and the man will come out and climb up.

11. You'll need some timing for this next part. You'll need to click on the left cloud twice to get it to explode. As soon as possible click the man at the catapult to fire the rock through the acid rain, setting it on fire, which will burn down the hanging banner and blow up the trigger bomb to the right of the man on the top level (left-side).

12. Next, click once on the man on the top level (left-side), he'll fall down to the next level.

13. You'll need some timing here again. Click on the manhole cover on the left side of the wall of where the man you just moved was. This will open up and another man will jump out followed by a fly. Immediately start clicking on the fan in the wall between the two men on the second level. The fly will get sucked through the fan and bother the man on the other side of the wall. While the fly is bothering the second man, you need to click on the man below the crate to get him to move to the throw lever. Once he's moved, click on the man who came out of the manhole cover to get him to fall to the bottom level. You should now have a man on each throw lever.

14. Below the man on the bottom level is an arrow pointing to the left. Click on it to make it point to the right. Now click on the bottom man to throw the lever for the current. Next, click on the man on the second level to open the trap door, then click the third man to drop the crate. The crate will release a fish which falls into the water and is carried by the current to the fishermans hook.

15. Click on the man on the bottom level to stop the current, then click on the fisherman who will reel in the fish, eat it, and then bounce to the very top.

16. Once he's at the top, click on him so he goes inside which will turn on the first torch.

17. Click on the sign to turn it back into a green arrow and then click the yellow up arrow to make the man go back inside the house.

18. Click on the left arrow of the flywheel to tell the stairs to go left, then click on the stairs to move them up against the crate.

19. Click on the window to open and slam shut the window. This will cause the green blob to fall to the ground.

20. Click on the man on the bottom level to turn on the water current again, then click on the green blob who will jump into the water, but because of the current will blow up the trigger bomb.

21. Click on the man on the bottom level to stop the current, then ring the doorbell again to make the man come out and go up the stairs. You'll need a bit of timing as you need to click on the crate when the man is at the top of the stairs so he falls into the crate. Immediately after, the left side of the crate will fall down and the man will be driving a monster truck (literally).

22. As soon as you see the monster truck go into the water and get to where the trigger bomb used to be, click on the porticullus to raise it out of the way of the truck. The truck will drive through and the man will jump off, climb the steps, and go inside.

23. This is it! One more step to winning! Click the two torches to close the switch and enable the gate.

24. Congratulations! You're a wiener!!!!

10. Click on the UFO and then very quickly click the yellow button below the box on the right. Several things happen here. The UFO tries to abduct the guy, but gets the boulder instead. It drops the boulder on that mine which explodes and turns the red arrow up. The guy runs into the bathroom and flushes which causes pipes underneith to fall away exposing a red blob that we'll use later.

Goal 2: Drain The Pond
1. Click the doorbell on the bathroom.

2. Click the guy that comes out of the bathroom.

3. Click on the same guy again so he moves left.

4. Click the bottom lever guy three times so you see a shield.

5. Click the switch to the left of green arrow.

6. Click the bottom lever once.

7. Click on the tube above the door on the far left, so it will bend upwards.

8. This requires some timing. click on the UFO and it will fly up and to the right. Just before the UFO leaves the screen, click on the shield and then click on the bottom left guy who will pull a lever. This will fire a rock that destroys the UFO and freezes the pond.

9. Click on the shield then click the left lever guy. This will fire another rock that will bounce off the shield into the yellow basket.

10. Click on the shield then click the left lever guy. This will fire a water activated bomb that will bounce off the shield into the yellow basket.

11. Click the light directly above the door on the far left. The guy will move back to his original position.

12. Click the small gear in the middle of the wood box, it should start to spin.

13. Click the left yellow button under that box which will shoot out another boulder.

14. Click the switch to the left of the green arrow.

15. Click the lever guy 3 times16 - Click the red bomb. The top guy will throw it over the pond, which will cause it to melt.

16. Click the window in the top left in the tree. This will drop a carrot.

17. Click the spider web in the top left in the tree. A spider will come down.

18. Click the spider and then quickly click the bird. This will cause the bird to get pissed off and shoot a laser out of its head (???) which releases a ladder on the second tree. This will also overload the yellow basket, causing it to fall on the boulder below. It then gets kicked into the pond and the water bomb sinks and blows a hole in the wall, which drains the pond. Whew.

19. Click the switch to the left of the green arrow.

20. Click the lever guy once. You should now have the bottom guy waiting at the lever at the bottom of the pond. Leave him for now.

Goal 3: Burn The Vine
1. Click the right leaves on the second tree. A yellow fruit will fall and damage up the second landing pad.

2. Click the bell on the building to the right. The last guy (a mechanic?) will climb down and repair the landing pad. When he goes outside, close the door bending him by clicking on the door. He will repair the landing pad and eventually end up by the red up arrow.

3. Click on him and he'll climb the ladder.

4. Click him again and he'll burn the vine.

5. Click him again and he'll climb down.

6. Click the red arrow twice so it points right.

7. Click the small bridge just between the bathroom window and the landing pad that got repaired. This will open up an entry to the cave below.

8. Click the left edge of the crate in the cave below, which will open it.

9. Click the mechanic and he'll fall into the cave.

Ending: Make The Soup
1. There is one last sequence, and you have to get the timing right. You must click on the mechanic so he goes into the crate. He will ride out on a cart with a large bowl and arms. Click on the red blob on the ceiling so it drops an orange donut in the cart as it drives by. Click on the guy by the lever in the pond which will release a green donut, too. Both donuts need to land in the cart, which will stop under the light. For the timing on the red blob, click just as the cart is reaches the edge of the side of the crate that we opened. For the timing on the lever, click the lever guy just as the cart reaches the first bump it goes over.

2. See that button that says "Do not push"?

3. Don't push it. It will blow up the guy in the cave. You can still finish even if you do, but if you let him live, you can see some concept art for all 3 Hapland games at the end.

4. Click the gear at the bottom right to turn that button sign around.

5. Now you can push the button.

Image: Blackbird by Shilin (Online Manga)

I have updated my link list to include this really great piece of original artwork. Thank you, o Great Deviant Art!

Damn me if I don’t sound like a teenage Japanese fangirl (*slap self* Must stay focused...)

Anyway...

Every week, I browse around for a piece of artwork from various artists because it’s been a habit of mine since I’ve learnt I could change my desktop background. I go through a new desktop image on the average of 3 times a week, until I decided to leave my desktop blank and just imagine what my next background might be.

But this artist I discovered two weeks ago has too many great art to become my desktop image. So I might as well give the fella free promoting and post it right in this here blog.

This is the poster for Blackbird, if ever she decides to publish her manga that it. It was originally intended as the cover for Book 2 but she supposed dual-purpose artwork goes well with anything.

The story so far revolves around a magic caster named Veloce Visrin and her quest to find the purpose of her existence. You see, sometime ago, the government of most of the nations in the region had banned explicitly all uses of magic, after the brutal slaying of one of the royal family.

However, Veloce was spared, as a pawn of her king, an open secret and possibly the last of her kind. But then came an avalanche of events triggered by the infamous assassin, Blackbird. Veloce could no longer stay hidden in the town that hated her and so she leaves...

This fast-paced gritty manga is still in its infancy but it’s just too damn cool. Her art design reminded me of CLAMP and her storyline feels like something Type Moon might have produced. Blackbird is an online manga, free-to-read.

Blogger Tag = Monkeys on Keyboards

Courtesy of a tag from the dynamic duo, twosuperheroes, I have been de-evolutionized into primitive user.

Me Quickening. Hear me grunt. See me ping blog. Me get blog tag.

“We've heard that a million monkeys at a keyboard could produce the Complete Works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.” -Robert Wilensky-

Hahaha. It did get me do more surfing. I was looking for 4 serious, new bloggers who potentially have not yet been tagged by this menace. And thus, I sneeze on your blogs.

Fly Over Me: Because I've yet to catch you in person!
Raising Mercury's Negative Negative Positive: Because I keep catching you in this blog!
Adino Online: Because your dear wife needs more publicity!
Satkuru.com: Because I like your pubilcity!

These infected bloggers are under no obligation whatsoever to infect other bloggers. This is just to say I like your pages and that your names are not in the Unsaved-Monkeys-List (scroll down see below). Now spread the blog tag and help prove Robert Wilensky... partially wrong.

Tutorial for Newbies: How to Build a phpBB3 Forum Community (Part One)

Come on, we all love forums. There’s not a reader somewhere in here that isn’t a member of at least one forum community dedicated to some esoteric hobby, be it about writing stories or making music bands. I got myself a membership to 5 forum groups and some I won’t mention.

Not that the ones I won’t mention is illegal or anything... wait yes, it’s illegal. Note to self, delete YouTube account as soon as-, whoops, not yet.

What if you can build yourself a forum community?

I mean other than a joined blog group or opening an account with a free forum service. I was talking about from the server up. The hard way. The folder-and-files way.

There are various open source systems built in ASP or PHP that are free to download so that you can customize right down to the coding, like vBulletin, InvisionBoards and phpBB3.

The advantage of installing your own forum instead of signing up for a free one is that you can control the inner resources, like board style, graphical, extra features (once you get the hang of it), having your own server name and most of all, NO ADS!

If you’re a high-tech programmer person, with your own web server and your large database and your $$$-a-month service, all this would probably bore you to death because this tutorial is aimed mostly for baby Netizens. But do read on and tell me which part I might have missed because I ain’t no a getting-high tech *burp* prongs-grammer.

Step 01: Get a hosting server.

Aaaah, but not just any hosting servers. You’ll need the ones that have support like ASP, PHP, MSSQL or MySQL, so to speak.

There are hundreds and hundreds of freebies out there, like Yahoo or x10hosting or Wordpress or just click this damn link and you’ll get what I mean.

For this tutorial, let’s go with an old favourite of mine, Zymic Webmaster Resources and team it with a forum system that’s easy to get used to, phpBB3.

*Note: For me, Zymic’s biggest drawback is that its browser upload is painfully tedious (see their tutorial).

Sign in an account.

Step 02: Make an SQL database.

You got to have a place to store all your forum messages and this is where SQL databases come into play. It’s not that hard really. Zymic here offers MySQL so let’s refer the steps to that.

*Note: It helps if your hosting server’s MySQL has phpMYAdmin support though, as in the future when you gain experience and if you ever need to extend your database manually.

You have to create a database name and a database admin’s username.

Match the pair of them together. Commit both names and the password to memory as you’ll need them during forum installation.

Step 03: Upload all them files.

AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Heh. Patience is virtue.

It’s advisable to make a folder named ‘forums’ in your File Manager and upload all the phpBB3 files in there. That way, you can use your direct web address for other things. Like a home page or a web content site.

Download the latest phpBB3 forum zip file from the main site.

Unzip it and place the files and folders into your forums folder.

Aiyo, Zymic, so very little uploads-lah... Luckily they have an FTP tutorial.

Step 04: Open the Install.php page.

Okay! Upload everything? Even the kitchen_sink.exe? No? Well, that’s okay because there is no kitchen_sink.exe anyway.

When all files have been uploaded, this is the easier part but you have to pay attention. Open a new browser window and go to the install folder of your forum system. That’s where you’ll find the install page.

Here’s an example of my forum’s install page.

http://www.*this_is_your_direc_web_address*/forums/install

If you’ve uploaded everything, this is the page you would see.

Oooooo... Check out that new forum smell.

Click the ‘INSTALL’ tab on the top left corner. Most of the features that might be available for the forum you won’t need to consider since the system will check it for you.

So all you need is just follow the steps and fill in the blanks. Start install then.

There might be some red stuff, noting unavailability, depending on your hosting server. As long as the requirement is only optional, you’ll be fine.

Remember that MySQL database you made in Step 02?

Add them in the install’s Database settings.

Between their next steps, the install system will tell if you got a successful connect or you haven’t. The other steps will follow like any usual sign-in mode. There are most places you can leave blank unless you’re sure you know what it means.

Yay, you got a forum!

This is the confirmation page. You can tell because it’s got the big freaking ‘Congratulations’ sign, like you’ve won the lottery or something. But it’s not over yet. Click the LOGIN button.

Hey, what’s that red bar doing in my Administrator Control Panel?

Your final step is to go back to your Zymic File Manager. Don’t worry; you won’t need to upload anything more (hahaha!). Just go to your ‘install’ folder and delete/rename it, whichever way.

Personally, I’d just rename it. It may take up quite a space in my hosting server but if I should ever need to reset and re-install my forum system, I really don’t want to have to upload them files again.

Looky! It’s my forum up and running!

Next:
Now that you’re a budding administrator, I’ll show you how to operate your forum. An administrator is as different as a moderator and as different as an ordinary member. How different? For starters, an administrator has all the 3 kinds of control panels.

I Got Tagged but I Need a Fourth Wheel!

My Thursdays, as some of you might remember, is always my Spend-Night-At-School. Not that I actually sleep at school but it’s a great opportunity to get some work done in a very quiet time. Gives me an opportunity to visit blogs of blogger’s friends.

So I had my dinner of Ayamas’s Pepper Chicken Rice.

And I suddenly remember that the toosuperheroes had just got an influx of Sarawak pepper. I don’t know if Ayamas is using the same Sarawak pepper or some Western species because I say RM$5.80 for one box of quarter chicken with rice is ridiculously expensive.

Anyway, since I don’t want to go home yet (late pm as it was) so instead I waited long enough so the surrounding mamak stalls would be too full of late night TV people for snatch thieves to risk striking lone walkers. Yeah, my headscarf just screams female.

Dessert. It’s something Mak packed for me from the fridge. It’s got a sponge cake base, clear grape jelly centre and a thick condensed milk on top. It’s delicious; one of few of Mak’s cooking experiments that are more than just edible.

So as I was chomping on my dessert and surfing to their site and gosh, what did I find?

I’ve been tagged.

What? Did you expect one of them had puked (again) or something?

This is great because I’ve never been tagged before, considering my baby is barely 2 months old. Now whom the heck do I tag for the next 4 people? I immediately thought of 3 fellows that might appreciate getting tagged but who will be my fourth wheel?

Hmmm...

Looks like a trip through PetalingStreet.org then!

All this eating and blogging and I damn hell forgot to do my homework! Gimme a day or two to find my fourth tag, guys!
